GIC's
Ten Star is a member of the Registered Deposit Brokers Association. TEN STAR subscribes to Cannex software, which enables us to shop the market for GIC's, annuities and term deposits.
There are many kinds of GIC's. They usually have a fixed period of time; say 1 year, 2 year, 3 year, 5 year, and 10 year as examples. They usually have a fixed rate of interest, credited every 6 months or annually. They can be redeemable before the expiry of the fixed term. These would have a lower interest rate compared to a non-redeemable GIC. You could purchase a series of laddered GIC's, maturing at the end of say, 1 year, 2 year, 3 year, etc, depending on your needs. They can be owned inside or outside a registered retirement savings plan. They are one of the most conservative investments you can purchase. Non-registered GIC’s are not tax-sheltered and the purchasing power at maturity is reduced by inflation over the investment period.
